Assumptions on medical notes – can destroy people’s lives

I found out earlier this year that my mental health / medical notes contained falsehoods like:

  • Refused antidepressants (I didn’t at first, but due to taking Seroxat which made me severely ill and Prozac which made me blackout, it put me off. In the 1990’s the drugs were particularly bad. I was wise to avoid them. However doctors assumed I’m the ‘baddie’ not the drugs! Shocking
  • Heavy cannabis user (Again totally false. I’m teetotal)
  • Complains a lot (Yes, because I was let down for 20+ years and given almost zero treatment)
  • Refused mindfulness course we lined up for him (Years ago, my life was highly volatile and I moved around a lot due to interpersonal mayhem. On receiving the referral letter from the NHS for mindfulness (forwarded on in the post), I no longer lived in the area. so couldn’t do their course. HOWEVER, a friend paid for me to do a private 8-week mindfulness course at Cambridge Buddhist Centre. Of course this information wasn’t on my notes. I even went on to study mindfulness and did a year long mindfulness¬†course)

I gave all this feedback but the notes weren’t corrected. It makes me angry not to be listened to.

Anyway if you’re a doctor, a mental health nurse, or a psychiatrist, remember that the notes are NOT gospel. Ask the patient! Sadly most doctors trust the notes far more than their patients! Just damn awful.
